One of the many many things I’m grateful for is my education. I was able to go to elementary school, junior high, high school and college – getting the same education as every one of my peers. Unfortunately, in some countries this just isn’t the case. In certain countries, girls are denied an education… just because they’re girls!
Dogeared’s recently decided to focus on women’s education in our charity efforts for this very reason. We think that through education, women can be motivated to elevate themselves as leaders and role models in society. Enter Girls Learn International (GLI), a wonderful organization that we’ve recently partnered with. They recognize the need for awareness of this issue and connect students from middle and high schools in the U.S. with schools in countries that are working to educate girls. The children in the U.S. learn what prevents girls from getting an education in other countries and what the consequences are of being denied an education. Throughout the school year, U.S. students learn about human rights, think of ways to educate their peers about the hurdles girls face trying to go to school, and fundraise on behalf of their partner school. How cool is that?!
The girls in this photo above are from a partner school in Cambodia. We love how happy they look! Plus, all the kids involved with this program are introduced to the responsibility and emotional rewards of being a global citizen and helping others at such a young age. It’s karma, education, empowerment, and love – all rolled into one!
Great job, GLI – we’ll be supporting you all the way!
